U.M. ARMY Celebrates 10 Years in Northeast!!!

12910Summer of 2013 marks the 10th official mission season for United Methodist Action Reach-out Mission by Youth – Northeast. In ten years the organization has grown from hosting one program attended by seventy participants to six weeklong programs with an anticipated five hundred participants this summer. Over the years, participants from the northeast have performed countless home repairs and touched thousands of lives in local communities. We have hammered, sawed, painted and raked. We have brought hope to those who felt forgotten and have watched a full generation of high school students mature into Christian adult leaders with a heart for serving others.

The story of U.M. ARMY – Northeast actually began in 2002 when a group of about 12 youth and adults left the parking lot of Wethersfield UMC in Connecticut and headed toward their first U.M. ARMY experience in Paris, Texas. The group returned full of enthusiasm and a determination to bring this amazing program home. In summer of 2003 a group of leaders arrived from Texas to run a program for about 45 people from a handful of Connecticut churches. In June of 2004 Northeast became an official chapter of U.M. ARMY and before the ink was even dry on the charter agreement, Northeast hosted its first program under its own leadership at Nichols UMC in Trumbull, CT.aboutus2

Over the years, countless United Methodist churches as well as groups from several other denominations have experienced U.M. ARMY in this part of the country. Youth groups have arrived in our programs from as far south as Maryland and as far north as Maine. Churches have hosted us in Connecticut, Massachusetts, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Vermont, New Hampshire and New York State. In our vow to grow responsibly, we have trained hundreds of volunteer leaders. In our response to regional needs, we have added Young Adult and Mixed Age programs to our offerings.

A dedicated Board of Directors works tirelessly year round to evaluate and plan our programs. Special thanks to the many people who have served as board members over the years. They have given so much of their time and energy to make U.M. ARMY – Northeast what it is today.

In celebration of our 10th Anniversary, U.M. ARMY – Northeast will be returning to our roots with a program during the week of July 14-20th at our original host church, Nichols UMC in Trumbull, CT. In addition, there will be special events planned over the course of the year to share the joy of our past, pray for our future and to praise God for U.M. ARMY – Northeast as it exists in the present.
